President's Message

Do your civic duty.........

~ By Pete Stephinson

Two recent headlines caught my eye. The first was "Do your civic duty: eat this fish" which headlined an article on the lionfish plague which is impacting our local waters. I saw a couple of Lionfish during mini-season, so to me this article was very topical. The article goes on to describe the problem and suggests the solution : that we popularize lionfish as a delicacy. Apparently they are very good eating. The hypothesis is that once the most efficient hunter the world has ever known (that's us) acquires a taste for them, they won't stand a chance. You can read the article by clicking here For those of you spearfisher people who land a few, this site gives a selection of Lionfish recipes.

The other headline was "Volunteers grow coral to restore reefs". This article, published in the Sun Sentinel describes efforts which are being made in the Keys to reintroduce Staghorn coral. It is great to see the efforts which are being made to restore coral on the reefs. The article has some great photos of the work in process. To read the article and see the photos click here.

Well I hope those of you who went out during mini-season caught a few. I was out both days and had a great time. We didn't catch our limit but enjoyed being out on the water and diving regardless. I've been out since and while I haven't seen too many bugs have enjoyed the dives.

Check out this Month's calendar and you'll see we have lots on. There are a number of local dives and our annual Sea Food Fest on October 2nd. The following weekend I will be taking down a group to Key West to do 2 two tank dives  the Vandenberg. And in November Larry will be taking a group to dive Ginny Springs. There's plenty of warm weather left so lots of opportunities to get some more diving in.

Our September Meeting is
a social meeting. That means we don't have a guest speaker but have pizza and spend our time socializing - I hope to see you there

I am also planning to do lots more diving this summer

See you in the water some time soon

Pete

Say thanks to those who are stepping up to organize trips/events. Think of one wholesome group activity you enjoy. Think hiking, biking, go-cart racing…don’t limit yourself. Wouldn’t you like to have some friends come along? Need ideas or help? Ask a club officer or Member-at-Large. More participation makes us a better club.

"POLICIES & PROCEDURES" NOW PUBLISHED ON THE WEBSITE

The rules and regulations that we must all abide by are now printed in their entirety on the website.  I cannot stress enough how important it is that all members, new and old, read and be thoroughly aware of how these rules apply to them.  I have summarized below some of the more important points.

Payment:    A member is confirmed only after they have paid. Payments for dives must  be made when signing up. Payments for trips must be made according to the schedule as outlined by the Coordinator.  In the event that a dive, trip, etc. is overbooked than those confirmed to go will be determined by the date order of payment.

Cancellation:   Once a member signs on for a dive, event, etc. he/she is obligated to pay unless they contact the Coordinator by the specified cancellation time, as outlined in the Policies and Procedures.

Certification Requirements:  Some dives will be restricted to divers with certain minimum requirements, generally as specified by the dive operator. In some cases these minimums may be set by the Coordinator in conjunction with the E-Board based on the profile and/or characteristics of the planned dive.  No exceptions will be allowed for any reason.

Special Needs:  Some of our members have "special needs" when participating on a dive or trip.  These can be cases where the person needs extra assistance on a dive boat, special requirements regarding accommodations, etc.  Coordinators are not psychic.  It is the responsibility of the member to make sure the Coordinator knows of these needs well in advance of the event.

Please be sure that these rules are clear to you.  If not, get clarification from any E-Board member.

A SAFETY MINUTE

Joe G's September, 2010 Safety Minute

Pre-Dive Risk Assessment

Things divers need to consider in prevention of diving accidents:

1. Careful selection and pre-dive physical examination of the divers.

2. Careful selection of the appropriate equipment and gas mixtures for the dive.

3. Careful pre-dive planning to identify potential problems and formulate contingency plans.

Generally, the requirement is for a vigorous, emotionally mature individual free of any systemic disease or conditions that are well-controlled.

Dives should not be undertaken with temporary acute illnesses, such as ENT infections, hangovers, substance abuse, bronchitis or 'pneumonia', seasickness or excessive fatigue.
