Presidents Message

Fresh off the plane........

~ By Pete Stephinson

For the last couple of weeks I've been out of town - visiting family and friends in Australia and New Zealand. I had a great time in both places but unfortunately didn't get any diving in. I had planned to dive the Great Barrier but a Tropical Cyclone (aka a Hurricane) approaching North Queensland brought 25-30 knot winds and 9 ft swells - not exactly good diving weather. I did see a lot of kangaroos which are about as common as deer in Pennsylvania in the area I was visiting. I arrived in New Zealand the day before the New Zealand National day - Waitangi Day. As I was visiting family who live close by Waitangi  I was able to attend some of the events at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. I spent much of my time re-visiting favorite local spots and catching up with family and friends. It was a great trip and I had a good time. But while it's great to travel, it's also good to be back home and I'm looking forward to getting back into my normal routine.

Our calendar is filling up for March and beyond so there will be plenty to keep us busy. Most notably there is the SUDS Flea market on March 14-15. SUDS (Soldiers Undertaking Disabled SCUBA) is a very worthy charity and I ask for your support. SUDS helps in the rehabilitation of disabled veterans by giving them the experience of SCUBA diving. You can donate something to sell, donate money, or donate your time. Any or all of the afore mentioned will be gratefully appreciated. The latest information will be available at our March General Meeting.

Also in March is our annual Pig Roast -- the first of our signature social events of the year and always a lot of fun. I look forward to seeing you there.

Our speaker for the March Meeting is Dr John A Gifford who will tell us about the artifacts found in the little Salt Spring of Sarasota county. These are some of the oldest and most unique finds in Florida so I am sure this will be a most interesting presentation.

With Spring rapidly approaching we will soon be in peak diving season. This is the time of the year when we are trying to lay out a schedule of dives to cover the spring and early summer. If you have enjoyed attending club dives now is the time to start thinking about what contribution you can make to our calendar. If you have a favorite dive  why not set it up as a club dive? I'm sure you'll find a number of other SFDI members keen to enjoy it with you. If you don't know how to get started then Dave Schneider, myself or one of the other eBoard members will be pleased to help you get started.

Of course you can't participate in any of our club events  if you're not a member - and if you haven't renewed for 2009 you are now overdue. Unfortunately you will now be up for the $5 late fee. We have held our membership fee at  $55 for 2009 (additional family members $15) which is a great deal when you consider all the activities, events, dives and overseas trips which you have the opportunity to attend.

See you in the water some time soon

Pete

Julie needs that beauty rest, you know.  Call her for more details.

March 28:  Pig Roast! (Saturday)  The first of our signature party events, a blast for all comers - except the pig.  As always, at the Lauderdale Isles Yacht and Tennis Club.  Please bring a covered dish (there will be a sign-up sheet at the meeting) and a $10.00 bill per person. The Club will provide beer, wine, water and soft drinks, as well as the aforementioned pig . Please remember; we are not permitted to bring any form of alcoholic beverage. They are available - for a price - at the Yacht Club bar.

April 3-5:  4th. Annual Spring Camping Weekend  Craig and Linda have so much fun in their tent that they have reserved four sites at Jonathan Dickinson State Park and want a bunch of people to join them (but not in their tent - ya gotta bring your own). Unlike previous years we will be diving rather than canoeing.  Cost should be around $15.00 per person (plus the dive) and will include Friday night burgers and 'dogs dinner. Based on past attendance I would suggest signing-up soon. Call Craig or Linda for more details.

April 6:  SFDI Executive Board Meeting at Connections for Business, 2843 Pembroke Road, NE corner of I-95 and Pembroke Road. Everybody welcome, so come join us. Meeting starts at 7:30 sharp.

April 11:  12:30 PM Show 1:00 PM Go (Saturday) Let's all jump in the water and get wet!  Joe G. has us booked on RJ's Big Com-Ocean out of Miami. After the dive a good meal at Monte's is always a treat. Let's have a good turnout for Joe. Cost for the dive will be $55.00, tax and tip included. Call Joe for more details or go to www.rjdiving.com

April 12:  Jimbo's Birthday  Not a Club event, but everyone is invited to join the old geezer as he celebrates his 82nd. birthday.

April 18:  8:00 AM Show 8:30 AM Go (Saturday) John and Dave are leading the flotilla back to sea for another Private Boat Dive. As always space is limited so be sure to sign-up early or give them a call to reserve your spot.  It may be redundant, but be on time since the boats pull out promptly at 8:30 and you don't want to be waving at them from the John U. Lloyd State Park dock.

April 23:  Dinner-at-Large (Thursday)  Our appetites turn to the Orient as Gerry Cowen hosts a dinner at Ichiban Japanese Restaurant. The dinner gong will chime at 7:30 so bring your appetites and chopsticks.  Ichiban is located on University, south of I-595. Call Gerry for more details.

December 5:  Holiday Party  Here's the news y'all have been waiting for!  Same time, same place, same fun.

AND SOME LAST IMPORTANT NOTES...

Club Policies on Dives and Trips:

Dives, Trips, Activities and events are run according to the SFDI Policies and Procedures, which are available to everyone.  If you don’t have a copy, please ask the Membership VP, or other E-Board member at the next General Meeting. Here is a summary of some of the important ones:

1.      Payment for Dives, Events and trips:  A member is confirmed on a dive, trip or event only after they have paid.  Payments for dives should be made when signing up.  Payments for trips should be made according to the schedule as outlined by the trip coordinator.  In the event that a dive/trip/activity is oversubscribed, then those confirmed will be determined by the order of payment.

2.      Cancellation:  Once a member signs on for a dive/event he or she is obligated to pay for that dive/event unless they contact the coordinator for that dive/event and cancel by the specified cancellation time.  Not paying immediately does not eliminate the requirement to make full payment if you do not cancel within the designated cancellation period or simply fail to show up for that dive/event.

3.      Certification Requirements:  Some dives will be restricted to divers with certain minimum certification levels.  For example Advanced Open Water.  In some cases, these requirements will be set by the dive operator.  In others they may be set by the dive organizer in conjunction with the E-Board based on the profile and characteristics of the planned dive.  In these cases the minimum certifications required for the dive will be clearly identified on the sign up sheet and in the published calendar.  No exceptions will be made for any reason.

4.      Special Needs:  Some of our members have “special needs” when participating on a dive or trip. These can be cases where the diver needs extra assistance on a dive boat or a member has particular requirements regarding accommodations. Dive organizers will check for the common ones, such as the requirement for extra assistance getting into or out of the water.  However, it is the responsibility of the member to make sure that his/her needs are known to the organizer and if there is any doubt the member should contact the operator in advance.  It is the responsibility of the club member to verify that their needs can be accommodated prior to the event/trip/activity.

March Meeting Program

LITTLE SALT SPRING – NO ORDINARY FISHIN' POND

On March 4th, SFDI will feature Dr. John A. Gifford, who will tell us about Little Salt Spring, a 74-meter diameter pond in the city of North Port, Sarasota County, Florida, lying within a 112-acre tract of land that, in 1982, was donated to the University of Miami by the General Development Corporation as an archaeological and ecological preserve.  A drowned sinkhole, Little Salt Spring contains some of the oldest and most unique artifacts discovered to date i n Florida.  Wooden artifacts 9,000 to 10,000 years old, as well as exceptionally well preserved plant and animal remains, are submerged in anoxic spring water that has preserved a remarkable range of organic materials that have decomposed almost completely in land archaeological sites.  In 1975 the skeleton of an extinct species of giant land tortoise was excavated from a ledge about 90 feet below the spring's surface; within the tortoise was recovered a sharpened and fire-hardened wooden stake that had been made by Paleo-Indians and used to kill the animal.  An overview of this “wet site” and its unique paleo-environment will be presented.

ABOUT DR. JOHN GIFFORD

Dr. John A. Gifford was born in Strasbourg, France in 1947, growing up in Houston, Texas, and in the suburbs of Boston. After graduating from the University of Massachusetts in 1965 with a BS in Geology, he studied at the Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Sciences from 1969 to 1972, receiving a Master's degree in Marine Science. He then went to work for George Bass's American Institute of Nautical Archaeology for a year, during which he searched for shipwrecks off the Turkish coast.  In 1974 he returned to the US and began a graduate degree at the interdisciplinary Center for Ancient Studies of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. In 1978 he was awarded the Ph.D. from that institution in the combined fields of geology and archaeology. In 1983 he accepted a position in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Miami, and in 1992 he transferred to the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, Division of Marine Affairs & Policy, to concentrate on teaching and research in marine archaeology.

Dr. Gifford's research interests lie at the interface between geology and archaeology, and he has co-edited two books on this interdisciplinary field, as well as written numerous articles on coastline changes since the last Ice Age, and how they have affected early human sites such as Little Salt Spring. He is particularly interested in submerged historic and prehistoric archaeological sites in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, and has participated in geoarchaeological projects in Belize, Mexico, Jamaica, the Bahamas, Florida, Greece, Turkey Israel, Egypt, Cyprus, and Tunisia. He also is interested in the technology of underwater archaeological excavation, particularly the application of Geographic Information Systems to underwater site recording and mapping.

SFDI Bike Ride

*And a good time was had by all.*
February 21 we had a bike ride/picnic scheduled for Markham Park in Sunrise. Little did we know that the entire park had been taken over by literally hundreds of boy scouts, girl scouts and cub scouts. After a rapid session of cell phone calls the the venue was changed to TY Park in Hollywood and we were right back on schedule. The riding was fun and no one went home hungry.
After seeing our dive flag proudly displayed at our camp site, a surprise visitor showed up. It was Mike Russo from Coastal Marine with family in tow. Small world huh?

Get Smart With Joe

A New Feature by Joe Gianodoto

New Divers & Scuba Students Need to Use Standard Equipment

If you are new to scuba diving or are a diving student, you will need a basic understanding of equipment. From the mask to fins, each piece of diving equipment has an essential function and purpose.

Scuba courses have classroom-based work. But a lot of the instruction takes place in the water, where you will learn to dive under the supervision of the instructor. Don't expect to make a big investment in equipment at the start. But you will need to buy a starter package consisting of mask, fins, snorkel, weight, weight belt and boots.

While it is not necessary to get the most expensive set, you want equipment that will not crack or leak from frequent use and exposure to saltwater. The bottom line with diving equipment is to go with brands that have a track record for quality.

Your diving instructor will explain the purpose of each piece of scuba equipment. You should not be required to buy anything beyond mask, fins, snorkel, weight, weight belt and boots. But you will need to rent dive equipment to participate in diving school. Usually certifying instructors are affiliated with dive shops and have rental equipment on hand.

Here's a rundown of standard scuba equipment that will get you started:
" Mask, fins, snorkel.
" Buoyancy compensator, also known as a BC or BCD. This inflatable jacket adjusts your buoyancy in the water.
" Regulator: This is the bit or mouthpiece from which you breathe. It is connected to air cylinder.
" Weight belt: The belt holds you down in the water. Weight belts sometimes are integrated with the buoyancy compensator.
" Air cylinder: The steel or aluminum cylinder holds compressed air that you use underwater.
" Octopus: This is your alternate air source
" Instrument: Gauge that can display your air supply and depth.

A SAFETY MINUTE

This Months Feature by Joe Giandinoto

Diving is all about safety. After all, the equipment we wear is designed to let us humans go safely into an environment that we otherwise could only stay in for maybe a minute (or seven minutes if you’re a trained free diver).  Following good, safe diving practices and having the right safety gear makes our diving experiences that much more enjoyable.

Know weather & current conditions:

If you are with a dive operator it is usually their call but you can still say no if you are not comfortable.
I did a dive once and the current was much stronger than I expected.
It was doable until I started to go down on the anchor line, then it got crazy.
It wasn't fun and I was getting uncomfortable.
We ascended early when I realized that my dive buddy & I must have looked like a couple of flags on a windy day.
Remember, it's OK to say no.
It is your safety after all.

South Florida Divers Club

  Frequently Asked Questions

By Brian Hufford

What kind of club is South Florida Divers?  We are a dive and social club.  We have diving and social events almost every week.  There’s more diving in the warmer months, but we have trips every month of the year.

What about social events?  We enjoy get togethers such as beach picnics, dinner on the town, bike rides, Holiday boat cruises, things like that.  We also have three parties each year: a pig roast in the spring, a seafood party in September and a holiday party in early December.  We usually have 80+ people in attendance; they’re always a great time.

Where do you dive?  Most of our diving is in the Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Palm Beach area, where we do boats and shore diving.  We get down to the Keys several times each year, and we also do two or three out of country trips.  This past year we had trips to Turks and Caicos, Bimini, and Papua New Guinea.

What about club meetings?  We have a monthly meeting, the first Wednesday of the month, at the Fort Lauderdale Power Squadron.  The meeting starts with a 30 minute social from 7:00 to 7:30 then the business section from 7:30 til 8:00, a short break, then the program or speaker.  We’ve had some very interesting speakers this past year, covering everything from the CSS Hunly to updates on important ocean environment issues.

How does the club organize all these events?  South Florida Divers is a volunteer organization, so it’s a club member that does each event.  Each event, social or diving, has a trip leader and a sign-up sheet.  We go over the calendar at each club meeting, plus, it’s in another section of this website. The sign-up sheet has the details about the trip, location, time, cost {if any}, trip leader.  We have a table set up with the sign-up sheets and a table for the treasury if funds are required.

What about membership?  Membership dues cover each calendar year and are $55 for individual and $65 for family.  There is a one time set-up fee of $5.  We ask that you be a member before participating in club events [other than the club meetings].

What do I need to do to join?  We have three requirements: You are a certified diver, you have and maintain diver insurance, and you pay your dues.   You can join at any club meeting, the membership table is just inside the door, or you can mail in the application.

What’s the best way to get involved in the club?  Become a member and join in the fun and events.  Members are always welcome to help with club work, lead a trip, organize a beach picnic, or participate on the board.
