President's Message

Summer is here.........

~ By Pete Stephinson

Summer is here. I can tell that by the great diving conditions and the upcoming activities on our calendar.

I had a number of good dives during May. The first of which was on Saturday May 10th on a club “private boat” dive. We first dove the Captain Dan followed by Anglin Reef. I can’t remember when we last experienced such great conditions. The sky was clear, the sea was flat, and the visibility was awesome. The temperature was in the upper 70s and I felt warm in my 3 mm  shorty. As a result, the light was great and the colors on the reef vivid. The only thing I was missing was my camera. Fortunately I had a trip to the Keys organized 2 weeks later.

The 3rd weekend in May I spent 3 days diving out of Tavernier. The conditions were the best I've ever encountered in the Keys. We did 10 dives including The Eagle and the Duane. There was no current and the visibility was so good that we could clearly see the dive boat from the deck of the Duane at about 100 Feet. We saw Bull Sharks and Jewfish on the deep wrecks, plenty of other life including Nurse Sharks, Eagle Rays and Eels on the shallow reefs. With the sunny weather and great visibility conditions were excellent for photography - you can see some of the photos elsewhere in this newsletter.

Looking at our calendar, you will see a lot coming up. Our trips to Cozumel and Roatan are in June and there’s a bunch of local dives on the calendar. We still need more members to step up and volunteer to run dives and activities. If you’ve been on club dives over the last year and haven’t run one then it’s time to think about helping out. Pick you favorite dive site, or one that interests you and speak to Dave, myself or one of the other  eboard members and we’ll help you put it together.

I was saddened to learn during  this past week of the passing of one of our Club Members, Butch Lee.  On behalf of the membership of South Florida Divers, I offer our sincere condolences to the Lee family.

We knew Butch as an enthusiastic diver, a photographer, the life of the party, and a great friend who was always upbeat, and positive in his outlook. Some of us also knew Butch as a great roomy.

Despite his disability, Butch was always cheerful and maintained a positive outlook. I don't know of anyone who ever heard him complain. Butch loved diving. Even though he didn't have the strength in his legs to kick against a current, it didn't stop him. Recently, he acquired an underwater scooter which he told me had improved his mobility and enjoyment of the sport.

There will be a memorial gathering here in Florida on June 21st, Butch's birthday, where friends will be invited to meet with the Lee family to share an Irish whiskey and reminisce about the good times we had with a great buddy.

There are a collection of  photos elsewhere  in this newsletter remembering Butch as we knew him……… We have lost a great Dive Buddy.

At our meeting on June 4th we will here a presentation by the  Marine Archaeological Research & Conservation Team who will speak to us about the on-site documentation of historic ship wrecks. It sounds interesting to me - I hope to see you there.

And as usual, hope to see you in the water some time soon

Pete

AND SOME LAST IMPORTANT NOTES...

Club Policies on Dives and Trips:

Dives, Trips, Activities and events are run according to the SFDI Policies and Procedures, which are available to everyone.  If you don’t have a copy, please ask the Membership VP, or other E-Board member at the next General Meeting. Here is a summary of some of the important ones:

1.      Payment for Dives, Events and trips:  A member is confirmed on a dive, trip or event only after they have paid.  Payments for dives should be made when signing up.  Payments for trips should be made according to the schedule as outlined by the trip coordinator.  In the event that a dive/trip/activity is oversubscribed, then those confirmed will be determined by the order of payment.

2.      Cancellation:  Once a member signs on for a dive/event he or she is obligated to pay for that dive/event unless they contact the coordinator for that dive/event and cancel by the specified cancellation time.  Not paying immediately does not eliminate the requirement to make full payment if you do not cancel within the designated cancellation period or simply fail to show up for that dive/event.

3.      Certification Requirements:  Some dives will be restricted to divers with certain minimum certification levels.  For example Advanced Open Water.  In some cases, these requirements will be set by the dive operator.  In others they may be set by the dive organizer in conjunction with the E-Board based on the profile and characteristics of the planned dive.  In these cases the minimum certifications required for the dive will be clearly identified on the sign up sheet and in the published calendar.  No exceptions will be made for any reason.

4.      Special Needs:  Some of our members have “special needs” when participating on a dive or trip. These can be cases where the diver needs extra assistance on a dive boat or a member has particular requirements regarding accommodations. Dive organizers will check for the common ones, such as the requirement for extra assistance getting into or out of the water.  However, it is the responsibility of the member to make sure that his/her needs are known to the organizer and if there is any doubt the member should contact the operator in advance.  It is the responsibility of the club member to verify that their needs can be accommodated prior to the event/trip/activity.

June Meeting Program

MARC - RIGHT ON THE MARK

Join SFDI on June 4th to hear about MARC, the Marine Archaeological Research & Conservation Team.  Three presenters, Bruce White, Stephanie Allen and Robert Dimesky will speak to us about MARC’s projects that provide on-site documentation of historic shipwrecks.  This research was completed for both the Florida and Georgia Divisions of Historical Resources, and the National Parks Service.  Field and video credits include the Copenhagen Bow Section, Half Moon and Lofthus, among many others.  We will learn about accepted procedures and techniques for responsible, academic wreck site treatment and view site plans, photomosaics and some captivating underwater video.

We will also learn about an exciting opportunity that MARC is extending to interested SFDI divers!  The MARC team wishes to engage motivated, experienced divers in the rewarding world of marine archaeology through a modular certification program offered through MARC in September and October of 2008.  The program, recognized by both principle field investigators and major universities, will be taught by the most noted marine archaeologists in the state and will certify diver graduates as Marine Archaeological Field Technicians.

DIVING SMALL

A Feature by Brian Hufford

Gettin' tried of seeing the same old schools of grunts on every dive?  You know, the mixed schools of French, Blue Stripe, White, Tomtate, and Small Mouth grunts we see on every wreck and reef we dive on.  They're fun to see and it's good the reef system is healthy enough for them, but there's a whole 'nother world in the cracks and crevices, under the ledges, and sitting on the coral just waiting to be discovered.  It's the world the macro photographers love, the small stuff. We've all seen the Saddle Blenny, with the distinct dark saddles on it back.   Just in our diving area alone, there are over 100 species smaller than 3”.  Many of them live under the ledges, like the Cardinal fish, glassy sweepers,  and some of the gobies.  Some of the other gobies and blennies are just sitting out in the open, either on coral or the rubble next to it, using body color and marking as camouflage. They often let a diver get very close before scooting off to a nearby hiding place.  My favorites are the tube blennies; they live in old worm holes, with just their head protruding.  They're small, the head is about the size of a pencil eraser.  They'll dart out and grab a bite to eat or go fight with a neighbor that's gotten too close.

Here's some tips for enjoying these fish.  Go SLOOOOOW!!  Anyone that's been diving with me knows I go very slow.  There's lots to see going slow, and it doesn't spook the fish, even the small ones.  Make sure you can see up close.  We older folks often need vision correction, so if you need reading glasses to read (this), you'll need them in your mask too.  Guage reader inserts work great for. (Don't use the “stick on” kind, they don't stay in the mask very well.) Carry a small dive light for seeing back under the ledge or in a hole.  I also carry plastic magnifying glasses, so I can see the marking and tell some of the very small ones apart.

Next time you're on the second dive on a shallow reef, consider diving small to see all these fun little critters.  Bring all the stuff you'll need so you can enjoy the dive.

LOBSTER LAW CHANGES

by Stan Pierce

The Florida State FWC is about to adversely change the Lobster catch laws to favor the Trap Fisherman and reduce the sport diver's opportunity to enjoy their sport.

Chris and I attended the Spiny Lobster Ad Hoc Advisory Board meeting at the Fishing Hall of Fame

Many points were raised but the absolute consensus was the FWCC Ad Hoc Lobster committee is under represented by recreational interests and as such, the commercial harvesters (trappers) currently have free reign to change the rules to ensuring themselves of a stable catch level taken from a dwindling resource.

A few numbers to think about:
- less than 500 trappers make a living from trapping lobsters yet they take 70+% of the resource
- over 130,000 recreational lobster stamps were sold to FL residents last year yet they only account for 20% of the catch
- commercial lobster divers account for 7% and bully netting accounts for the remaining 2-3%

We feel the Spiny Lobster Advisory Board was stacked in favor of the commercial trappers. The board is comprised of 4 commercial trappers, 3 wholesalers, 3 recreational fishers (divers) and 3 NGOs. No dive industry representative was appointed.

The meetings were held State areas, which were not populated with sport divers or dive industry businesses.

As Divers we are not against a shorter season for all parties. We are not against a larger license fee FOR ALL PARTIES (slotted for enforcement). We welcome any suggestions leading to a sustainable lobster fishery resource.

It is proposed to:
•    Lengthen the season for Commercial Trappers.
•    Require State issue catch tags for Sport Divers
•    Reduce the limit for Sport Divers
•    Put an end to mandatory trap reductions

SAVE YOUR SPORT

A SAFETY MINUTE

This Months Feature by Joe Giandinoto

Diving is all about safety. After all, the equipment we wear is designed to let us humans go safely into an environment that we otherwise could only stay in for maybe a minute (or seven minutes if you’re a trained free diver).  Following good, safe diving practices and having the right safety gear makes our diving experiences that much more enjoyable.

June 2008 Safety Minute

Scuba Diving Safety Procedures

When preparing for a boat dive, be a smart diver, arrive early to the dive boat, find a good spot, and set up your scuba dive gear before the boat even leaves the dock. Keep mask, fins, and other loose scuba diving equipment in a mesh bag under your seat where they can't be lost or broken. Stay out of the sun as much as possible, wear sun block, and if there is any chance of seasickness, take Dramamine a couple of hours before departure. Stay well hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Plan your dive entry and know how to get back on board after the dive. If you have questions about the dive plan, ask the divemaster before you hit the water. And if all goes well, as it should if you follow these tips, remember to leave a tip for the divemaster and boat crew before you disembark. They´ll appreciate it, and be even more glad to see you the next day.

South Florida Divers Club

  Frequently Asked Questions

By Brian Hufford

What kind of club is South Florida Divers?  We are a dive and social club.  We have diving and social events almost every week.  There’s more diving in the warmer months, but we have trips every month of the year.

What about social events?  We enjoy get togethers such as beach picnics, dinner on the town, bike rides, Holiday boat cruises, things like that.  We also have three parties each year: a pig roast in the spring, a seafood party in September and a holiday party in early December.  We usually have 80+ people in attendance; they’re always a great time.

Where do you dive?  Most of our diving is in the Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Palm Beach area, where we do boats and shore diving.  We get down to the Keys several times each year, and we also do two or three out of country trips.  This past year we had trips to Turks and Caicos, Bimini, and Papua New Guinea.

What about club meetings?  We have a monthly meeting, the first Wednesday of the month, at the Fort Lauderdale Power Squadron.  The meeting starts with a 30 minute social from 7:00 to 7:30 then the business section from 7:30 til 8:00, a short break, then the program or speaker.  We’ve had some very interesting speakers this past year, covering everything from the CSS Hunly to updates on important ocean environment issues.

How does the club organize all these events?  South Florida Divers is a volunteer organization, so it’s a club member that does each event.  Each event, social or diving, has a trip leader and a sign-up sheet.  We go over the calendar at each club meeting, plus, it’s in another section of this website. The sign-up sheet has the details about the trip, location, time, cost {if any}, trip leader.  We have a table set up with the sign-up sheets and a table for the treasury if funds are required.

What about membership?  Membership dues cover each calendar year and are $55 for individual and $65 for family.  There is a one time set-up fee of $5.  We ask that you be a member before participating in club events [other than the club meetings].

What do I need to do to join?  We have three requirements: You are a certified diver, you have and maintain diver insurance, and you pay your dues.   You can join at any club meeting, the membership table is just inside the door, or you can mail in the application.

What’s the best way to get involved in the club?  Become a member and join in the fun and events.  Members are always welcome to help with club work, lead a trip, organize a beach picnic, or participate on the board.
