President's Message

Summer's here......

~ By Pete Stephinson

Thanks to everybody who helped out at the Blue Wild Expo. I enjoyed some of the workshop sessions as well as spending time helping out at the booth -- we had fun and made contact with a number of prospective members. Sheri Daye, the expo organiser asked me to pass on her thanks to all our members who helped out. She appreciated our efforts. Thanks also to Sandra Camper who donated one of her works of art which we raffled off in support of the expo charity.

In case you hadn't noticed summer is upon us -- peak diving season. Recent club dives have been filled to capacity and they've been fun for all who participated. I dove last Saturday off Pompano and the viz was awesome -- about 100ft. If you take a look at the calendar you'll see it is well populated with dives over the next  several months. We have also scheduled our annual "members appreciation" beach picnic - always a lot of fun.

The highlight of July for many of us is lobster mini-season. Nows the time to dig out your lobstering gear in preparation for a fun couple of days. The lobsters are excited too..... they look forward to lobster season with the same sort of enthusiasm as turkeys looking forward to Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, lobster mini-season is also the busiest time of the year for diving accidents here in Florida. No lobster, no matter how big is worth taking a risk for. Remember the basics of diving safety and dive within the limits of safe diving practices.

You will remember at last month's meeting Debby Bradford shared her experiences of using SCUBA Board and demonstrated the private board she has set up for SFDI members. Since then a number of you have joined the board. If you haven't done so -- I suggest you get involved, it has the potential to broaden your diving experiences.

Our guest speaker at this month's general meeting is Suzan Melodonian who will show us photos of some of the spectacular aquatic life under the Blue Heron bridge. It will be interesting for those of us who have dove it to see what we've missed. I'm looking forward to Suzan's presentation

Now that we are in to summer, I am planning to do lots of diving.

See you in the water some time soon

Pete

"POLICIES & PROCEDURES" NOW PUBLISHED ON THE WEBSITE

The rules and regulations that we must all abide by are now printed in their entirety on the website.  I cannot stress enough how important it is that all members, new and old, read and be thoroughly aware of how these rules apply to them.  I have summarized below some of the more important points.

Payment:    A member is confirmed only after they have paid. Payments for dives must  be made when signing up. Payments for trips must be made according to the schedule as outlined by the Coordinator.  In the event that a dive, trip, etc. is overbooked than those confirmed to go will be determined by the date order of payment.

Cancellation:   Once a member signs on for a dive, event, etc. he/she is obligated to pay unless they contact the Coordinator by the specified cancellation time, as outlined in the Policies and Procedures.

Certification Requirements:  Some dives will be restricted to divers with certain minimum requirements, generally as specified by the dive operator. In some cases these minimums may be set by the Coordinator in conjunction with the E-Board based on the profile and/or characteristics of the planned dive.  No exceptions will be allowed for any reason.

Special Needs:  Some of our members have "special needs" when participating on a dive or trip.  These can be cases where the person needs extra assistance on a dive boat, special requirements regarding accommodations, etc.  Coordinators are not psychic.  It is the responsibility of the member to make sure the Coordinator knows of these needs well in advance of the event.

Please be sure that these rules are clear to you.  If not, get clarification from any E-Board member.

Dear Peter,

In the spirit of World Oceans Day, I would like to share with you and your local diving community some exciting new opportunities from the Coral Reef Alliance

But first, let me give you a bit of background about us. The Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL) originally began as a small, grassroots alliance of concerned divers that has since grown into the only international organization working exclusively to unite communities to save coral reefs. We are working to build a worldwide network of well-managed marine protected areas (MPAs) and provide education, tools, and inspiration to help local communities become passionate stewards of their reefs.

Check Out Our PSAs
SylviaEarlePhD.jpgWe've just released two short PSAs featuring legendary oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle. The videos will take you on a visual journey underwater and on land, where you will learn about our community approach, field program initiatives, and the underlying urgency behind our work. I invite you to experience the videos yourself on our website, and encourage you to share them with your local dive community members.

Enter Our Photo Contest
Your dive members are invited to submit their favorite coral reef photographs to CORAL's E-Current Photo Contest for a chance to win a copy of Reef—a gorgeous coffee table book featuring beautiful coral reef photographs. Each winning photograph will be featured in a special bi-monthly edition of E-Current, CORAL's free electronic newsletter, and will be available for download as desktop wallpaper from our website. Visit our photo contest page for rules and details or download a copy of the photo contest flier to distribute to your members.

Need a Speaker?
If you are looking for an expert speaker to talk about coral reef conservation for your next club meeting or event, let us know. We have several speakers available to talk about sustainable marine tourism, coral reef conservation programs, and best practices/tips for divers.

In closing, Happy World Oceans Day! Thank you for your time, and we look forward to hearing from you. Please let me know if you would like to sign up for our email list to receive our monthly e-newsletter and stay informed about opportunities with CORAL.

Cheers,

June's meeting

Hello all.

I just want to say THANKS to all who are keeping SFDI a very active scuba club which has existed 36 years so far. I continue to be very impressed at what the organization has done through the years. Especially raising funds for war veterans who have lost limbs in the war so they are able to learn to SCUBA dive.

The speaker for June Dr. Raymond Walder presented a wonderful lecture on the Hydro Labs. It was of great interest to me as SFDI in the early days along with a few other dive clubs organized South Fla. Underwater Council. An organization who put together the second best to Catalina Island California re compression chamber on Virginia Key at the NOAA Labs under the direction of Dick Rutkowski who was the Chief NOAA Diving Officer. I believe the re compression chamber is now at Mercy Hospital on Miami Beach. We worked many cases in the chamber while at the NOAA Labs.

I hope the return in the near future to the meetings. Keep up the great work as I know you will. I will stay in contact with Joe Smariga as to when both Bonnie & I will return.

Bill Gardner founder & first President of SFDI

July Meeting Program

************************************************************************************************

UNDER THE BLUE HERON BRIDGE

What spectacular sea life awaits us at Phil Foster Park in Palm Beach County ?   On July 7th, photojournalist Suzan Melodonian will guide us under the Blue Heron Bridge.  This presentation is a must-see for those who love this world reknowned premier muck diving site, and for those who have yet to discover it.  Suzan will highlight the fish and creatures living in the unique ecosystem that is Lake Worth Lagoon, and will also share with us her new book Under the Bridge, a rich compilation of photography and text of an undersea habitat unlike any other.  Come and enjoy the tour!

ABOUT SUZAN MELODONIAN

Suzan Meldonian has been a photojournalist since 1989.  Her work has appeared in the Smithsonian Institution and the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Discovery & Science, as well as in National Geographic Explorer films and the Sundance Film Festival.  She is also published in a number of underwater magazines including Dive Chronicles.  Recently she worked with National Geographic leading a team of twelve photographers to photograph underwater for its Bio Blitz in Biscayne Bay .  She’s been a member of Women in the Visual Arts and is now the current Newsletter Editor for the South Florida Underwater Photography Society at www.sfups.org .  To view more of her work, go to www.niteflightphoto.com .

Suzan says:  “I find that I am fascinated by water, whether it be a sea full of bizarre looking creatures or a sudden thunderstorm.  There isn't a day goes by that something ‘water’ doesn't captivate me in some way or another.  I strive to find the unusual, the rare moment, or the sheer beauty.

“To me, capturing a moment on film or stirring an emotional chord in the viewer is what photography is all about.  It is my passion. With each dive, I became more and more in tune with the myriad of colors displayed, when they were displayed and why they were displayed.  Scientists are still trying to figure out how they display and I find that remarkable.  In a world that is seemingly ‘blue’ to the naked human eye, I can't help but wonder...  what it is we are missing?  The answers are still there for us to discover.”

Get Smart With Joe G.

The ABC’s of diving glossary:

July, 2010 notes brought to you

by the letter : S

SAA - Sub-Aqua Association.

Safety Stop - A safety measure that divers take to decrease the risk of decompression sickness. The diver halts his ascent at a fairly shallow depth (usually 15 feet) toward the end of a dive to offgas nitrogen absorbed under pressure.

Salinity - A term used to describe the concentration of salt in water.

Sclerite - see spicule.

Scooter - see Diver Propulsion Vehicle

SCUBA - Self Containing Underwater Breathing Apparatus

SDI - Scuba Diving International. Qualification agency created in 1999. It grew out of sister company TDI, which specialises in the more advanced disciplines of technical dive training.

Second Stage - The part of a scuba regulator responsible for reducing the increased pressure delivered by the first stage to an ambient pressure that is breathable by a diver.

Single-Day - Only one day of diving was done in this particular dive series. "Single-day" does not denote the number of dives, but rather a single day of diving (for example: four dives could be made in a single day: or a single day of diving could include one dive only).

SMB - Surface Marker Buoy

Snorkel - A bent tube fitting into a swimmer's mouth and extending above the surface; allows swimmer to breathe while face down in the water.

Snorkeling - Swimming at the surface of a body of water while equipped with a diving mask, a shaped tube called a snorkel, and usually swimfins. Using this equipment provide the possibility to swim, look underwater and breath through the snorkel at the same time.

Snuba - Is a popular form of "introductory diving" (diving done in the presence of a professional, insured guide, and following a very short lesson, but not requiring a SCUBA certification).

SPG - see Submersible Pressure Gauge

Spicule - Hard, needle-shaped, calcium carbonate skeletal structure contained within soft corals and sponges. Also known as a sclerite. Spicules provide structural support, as well as deterrence against predators. Large spicules, visible to the naked eye are referred to as megascleres, while smaller, microscopic ones are termed microscleres.

Square Dive - A dive in which a diver descends to a single depth and remains until beginning the final ascent to the surface. This contrasts with multilevel dive, (see Page 123): for example, a diver descends to 60 feet / 18 meters and stays at 60 feet for 30 minutes before ascending. Square dives and multilevel dives are mutually exclusive.

SSI - Scuba Schools International. In 1999 SSI merged with the National Association of Scuba Diving Schools.

Stage Bottles - Secondary scuba cylinders that are used to carry different gas mixtures for consumption during various stages of decompression dives. Often used by technical divers.

Strobe - A common term used to describe an underwater flash unit used in underwater photography.

Submersible Pressure Gauge - An acronym for submersible pressure gauge. A device used to by divers to determine the gas pressure inside a scuba cylinder.

Supine - Lying flat on back, with face upward.

Surfactant - A substance produced in the lungs to reduce surface tension in alveoli and small airways.

Swell - Caused by waves formed by past wind, or wind at a distance.

Symptom - Any non-observable condition described by the patient.

A SAFETY MINUTE

Joe G's July, 2010 Safety Minute

Last month’s safety minute was all about the Don't’s of diving safety!

Below is a list of Do's, or rules, for safely.

Do dive with a trusted buddy.

Do hold your breath for 2 to 3 seconds in between breaths for longer bottom time before ascending.

Do ascend slower than your smallest exhaled bubbles.

Do stay down as long as you like without going into deco.

Do dive with the best equipment possible.

Do preserve the environment.

Do dive within your limited training.

Do your safety stop.

Do dive as a recreational diver, but remember that you are doing this activity for the purpose of having fun and entertainment!
