President's Message

Lobsters, watch out.......

~ By Pete Stephinson

I just returned with 17 other club members from a week on Saba - if you haven't been there, put it on your list. We had a great time. We dove the "signature" dives including the pinnacles and Diamond Rock. We also did numerous other dives closer to shore. All of them were excellent dives. We also enjoyed the rugged beauty of the island. A number of us did some hiking and made it to the top of Mount Scenery, about 2800 ft. As is often the case, the mountain top was covered in cloud so the scenery we saw was the lush rain forest which tops the mountain. Our trip was made all the better by excellent service from hotel and dive operator. You can see photos from the trip elsewhere in this newsletter. I haven't heard from any of our members who visited Fiji, and am looking forward to hearing of their trip.

While we were away, summer arrived. The temperatures are noticeably hotter. This only means one thing - time to get in the water for those warm summer dives. Check out are calendar to see what's planned for the July and beyond. We have lots of dives on the calendar including local favorites such as Tenneco Towers and a dive off of Key Largo. We also have our  our annual "Members Appreciation" beach party on July 25th - always a fun event. Just after that is Lobster mini-season -- something that lobsters look forward to with a similar level of enthusiasm to Turkeys looking forward to Thanksgiving.

Now I say this nearly every month, but we really do need to have some new faces help with organizing club dives and events. We do have a full calendar but it's a case of the same people doing all the work to make things happen. So come on guys and girls -- If you have enjoyed going on club dives and haven't helped set one up it's time to get off the stick and  start thinking about what contribution you can make to our calendar. If you have a favorite dive, why not set it up as a club dive? I'm sure you'll find a number of other SFDI members keen to enjoy it with you. If you don't know how to get started then Dave Schneider, myself or one of the other eBoard members will be pleased to help you.

See you in the water some time soon

AND SOME LAST IMPORTANT NOTES..

Club Policies for Dives and Trips

Dives, trips activities and events are run according to the SFDI Policies and Procedures which are available to anyone at any General Meeting.  If you do not have a copy you should certainly get one at the Membership Desk at the meeting.  Here is a summary of some of the important points.

1.  Payment:  A member is confirmed only after they have paid. Payments for dives must  be made when signing up. Payments for trips must be made according to the schedule as outlined by the Coordinator.  In the event that a dive, trip, etc. is overbooked than those confirmed to go will be determined by the date order of payment.

2.  Cancellation:  Once a member signs on for a dive, event, etc. he/she is obligated to pay unless they contact the Coordinator by the specified cancellation time, as outlined in the Policies and Procedures.

3.  Certification Requirements:  Some dives will be restricted to divers with certain minimum requirements, generally as specified by the dive operator. In some cases these minimums may be set by the Coordinator in conjunction with the E-Board based on the profile and/or characteristics of the planned dive.  No exceptions will be allowed for any reason.

4.  Special Needs:  Some of our members have "special needs" when participating on a dive or trip.  These can be cases where the person needs extra assistance on a dive boat, special requirements regarding accommodations, etc.  Coordinators are not psychic.  It is the responsibility of the member to make sure the Coordinator knows of these needs well in advance of the event.

Please be sure that these rules are clear to you.  If not, get clarification from any E-Board member.

Governor Crist approves the Florida Coral Reef Protection Act

We recently asked you to email Governor Charlie Crist and encourage him to sign bill CS/CS/HB 1423 to create the Florida Coral Reef Protection Act.

Your collective voice was heard. Last Thursday the Governor approved the bill creating the protection act.

The Coral Reef Protection Act is much needed and now clearly defines the authority for the protection of corals and penalties for boat anchoring and

grounding damage to the reefs of Palm Beach, Martin, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties. The text of the Act can be viewed at: http://files.statesurge.com/file/948869 and begins on page 82.

July Meeting Program

IMPORTANT CHANGE - PLEASE TAKE NOTE!

Since our speaker, Dr. Sally Bauer, lives in the Keys and will be driving home after her presentation, she will speak

to us at 7:30, and our business meeting will begin at approximately 8:45.

THE FLORIDA KEYS HISTORY OF DIVING MUSEUM

The Florida Keys History of Diving Museum is a not-for-profit educational institution focused on the story of humanity’s

quest to explore under the sea.  The museum is dedicated to collecting, preserving, displaying and interpreting artifacts, antiques, books, documents, photographs and oral history relative to the history of diving. On July 1, the museum’s

co-founder, Dr. Sally Bauer, will talk to SFDI about the international story of humanity’s attempts to explore,

understand and venture under the sea, as well as highlight the special role that South Florida and the Florida Keys have

played.

ABOUT DR. SALLY BAUER

Dr. Sally Bauer co-founded the Florida Keys History of Diving Museum with her husband, Dr. Joseph Bauer, of blessed

memory.  Before retiring, Dr. Sally was an emergency medicine physician and helped plan, design, build and administer

outpatient surgical centers.  The organizational and management skills that she developed in that work have been

instrumental in the development of the museum.

During their careers the Bauers pursued avocations as marine biologists, scuba divers and diving historians. Their passion

was to learn the evolution and history of humanity’s entry into the sea, and to share this largely untold story with others.

Their focus and expertise is on the early history of diving and technology, prior to the development of scuba.  Founding

members of the International Historical Diving Society of both the United Kingdom and the United States , the Bauers

have published articles on diving history, having researched original documents in libraries throughout the world.

Over the years, the Bauers acquired the world's largest collection of diving helmets, hand-operated air pumps, armored

suits, lights and other gear, as well as memorabilia, prints, photographs, books, film and video.  More than thirty countries

are represented in the collection.  These considerable historic resources, as well as Dr. Bauer's expertise in their history,

are available to the museum for its exhibits, programs and educational material.

A SAFETY MINUTE

July 2009 Feature by Joe Giandinoto

Physically Fit Fact

Did you know that 20 to 35% of all scuba fatalities result from heart and circulatory problems, usually in middle

age men?
Not to scare anyone away from scuba diving, just know that being fit is important and can help
you in the water as well as out.

Anyone with good heath and fitness can enjoy a lifetime of diving. Follow these guidelines:

  • See your physician for regular checkups.

  • Get regular exercise.

  • Be rested, hydrated and well-nourished before diving,

  • Use proper equipment and exposure protection.

  • Plan your dive, avoiding overexertion.

Don’t hide or downplay any medical condition or health problem. Address such a problem with a medical

professional.
