CALENDAR OF EVENTS August... and beyond
Say thanks to those who are stepping up to organize trips/events. Think of one wholesome group activity you enjoy. Think hiking, biking, go-cart racing…don’t limit yourself. Wouldn’t you like to have some friends come along? Need ideas or help? Ask a club officer or Member-at-Large. More participation makes us a better club. To
ensure privacy please note that event Coordinators’ phone numbers are
never posted. If you are a Club member please consult your Buddy
List for the number you need. If you do not have a copy there will
be one available at the next General Meeting, or contact Melissa Ames. This
calendar is here for your convenience. If you see an event of
interest, please contact the coordinator directly. You can sign up
for an event at any time. The coordinator will be more than happy to
place your name on the list and tell you where to mail payment.
Remember… your place for any event is not confirmed
until you have made payment. The first member to pay gets the spot. No
whining!! July 24, (Saturday): Beach Party!! On the south end of Ft. Lauderdale Beach near the Yankee Clipper at 6:00 P.M. Alcohol is not allowed on the beach.
September 4, (Saturday): Sea

"POLICIES & PROCEDURES" NOW PUBLISHED ON THE WEBSITE
The rules and regulations that we must all abide by are now printed in their entirety on the website. I cannot stress enough how important it is that all members, new and old, read and be thoroughly aware of how these rules apply to them. I have summarized below some of the more important points.
Payment: A member is confirmed only after they have paid. Payments for dives must be made when signing up. Payments for trips must be made according to the schedule as outlined by the Coordinator. In the event that a dive, trip, etc. is overbooked than those confirmed to go will be determined by the date order of payment.
Cancellation: Once a member signs on for a dive, event, etc. he/she is obligated to pay unless they contact the Coordinator by the specified cancellation time, as outlined in the Policies and Procedures.
Certification Requirements: Some dives will be restricted to divers with certain minimum requirements, generally as specified by the dive operator. In some cases these minimums may be set by the Coordinator in conjunction with the E-Board based on the profile and/or characteristics of the planned dive. No exceptions will be allowed for any reason.
Special Needs: Some of our members have "special needs" when participating on a dive or trip. These can be cases where the person needs extra assistance on a dive boat, special requirements regarding accommodations, etc. Coordinators are not psychic. It is the responsibility of the member to make sure the Coordinator knows of these needs well in advance of the event.
Please be sure that these rules are clear to you. If not, get clarification from any E-Board member.

OVERSEAS TRIPS 2010
September 18-25 (Saturday - Saturday): Bahamas’ Week . Dave Schneider is heading up this budget-priced week in the Caribbean. We’ll be at the Club Fortuna Resort. $1,100 +/- covers transportation, food, drinks, lodging, and 5 days of 2-tank dives. Transportation is by Air this year. For resort info, see www.wyndham.com/destinationsandinterests/interests/viva/main.wnt. The diving is top notch, as is the on-site dive operator.

Hi fellow SFDI members!
For those of you who have lost your original e-mail about how to get
onto the South Florida Divers forum on ScubaBoard, I'm sending them
again for your convenience. We are having a great time with this
forum that ScubaBoard gave to us for free. So far we've
scheduled a few dives...Blue Heron Bridge and a private
boat dive come to mind. We've posted post-trip pictures
from the club's Sea Experience dive, and posted meeting reminders.
It is SOOOO easy! First, you need to sign up for a FREE
ScubaBoard account. Just go to http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/register.php and
sign up. You can use any fun name you wish as long as it hasn't
already been taken. Sorry, you can't have DebbyDiver, it's mine.
:)
Once you are a member, simply click here to read how to get onto our
very own private South Florida Divers forum! http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/south-florida-divers-inc/337065-sfdi-members-how-access-private-forum.html
When you apply to the group, please write "I am a paid club
member and my name is " and tell us your real first and last name
so we can check you off on the buddy list.
We have two places on ScubaBoard, the public area and the private
area. So far, the members have just been using the public area
and you can get to that without opting in to the group. However,
the private area can ONLY be seen by our club members so if you have
something to post that you don't want the other 145,000 ScubaBoard
members to see, post it there.
Once logged in, wander around and get to know the place. I spend
most of my time in the Florida Conch area, and I frequently go on
impromptu beach dives with other ScubaBoardians.
If you have ANY difficulties please contact me directly at debby.bradford@yahoo.com,
or send me a PM on ScubaBoard. I'm here to help.
Look for an article in the August SFDI newsletter about how to
"subscribe" to the forum after you sign up for it, so that
you can get e-mail notification of new posts. This is not
automatic, you need to opt in to it. It's easy to figure out on
your own, though, so if you want to do that, you don't need to wait
for the newsletter.
Any questions? Please contact me. And do log in frequently
and join us for impromptu beach dives, private
boat dives, etc. Join in the fun!
SEA you soon,
Debby Bradford aka DebbyDiver

GLIDING BETWEEN THE STALAGTITES AND STALAGMITES |
|||
|
|
|||
| Does the sentence "The Good Divers Are Living" mean anything more to you than the obvious? Take the first letter of each word and think of a cave diving rule. Don’t know the rules? Come to SFDI on August 4th and learn them! A hint - T stands for Training, G stands for Guide Line, and …… come and find out the rest. Expert cave diver Tim Owens will highlight the extreme sport of cave diving - motivations, safety, equipment, training, and adventure. | |||
|
ABOUT TIM OWENS
|
|||
| Tim was first exposed to diving via the typical "discover-scuba" trip during a family vacation to Hawaii in 2003 and certified shortly thereafter. Living in Chicago at that time, most of his initial diving was confined to the Midwest quarries and Great Lakes shipwrecks, with the occasional Caribbean vacation trip thrown in. First exposed to cavern diving during a trip to Cozumel, Tim "caught the bug," and, in 2004, he relocated to South Florida where he progressed into more technical diving and took up cave diving. Today, Tim breathes with a rebreather and makes 200 dives a year - in caves up north to the reefs and wrecks from West Palm Beach to the Keys. |
