President's Message

Thank you :-)

~ By Pete Stephinson

Thank you to all members who turned out to help at the SUDS Fleamarket. It was a long weekend, starting on Friday evening with erecting the tents right through to tear down on Sunday afternoon. When you see the pleasure the wounded veterans get from diving, it makes it all worthwhile. While they were visiting, the wounded soldiers went diving and thoroughly enjoyed our local reefs - despite temps being in the high 60s. While we don't yet have a full accounting, preliminary numbers are that we raised over $18000, exceeding the amount we raised in 2009. Of course nothing would happen without vision and leadership. For that we have to thank Sam Rich for having the vision to see the need, and the leadership skills to make it happen. Great job Sam.  Thanks also to the local dive shops, operators, and other businesses who contributed by donating goods/services for the Fleamarket, or to support the visiting soldiers. For full details of the event check out www.sudsfleamarket.com.

Our calendar is filling up for April and beyond so there will be plenty to keep us busy. Up shortly is our annual Pig Roast, the first of our annual social events and always a lot of fun There is also our annual camping and canoe weekend at Jonathan Dickinson State park and a number of other dives, activities and events. Check out the calendar and come to the April meeting to sign up.  Our April meeting  is a social evening - come along and enjoy the pizza and socialize with other club members.

With Spring rapidly approaching we will soon be in peak diving season. This is the time of the year when you should be getting your gear out and serviced ready for summer diving. It is also the time when we are trying to lay out a schedule of dives to cover the spring and early summer. If you have enjoyed attending club dives now is the time to start thinking about what contribution you can make to our calendar. If you have a favorite dive  why not set it up as a club dive? I'm sure you'll find a number of other SFDI members keen to enjoy it with you. If you don't know how to get started then Bruce Wills, myself or one of the other eBoard members will be pleased to help you get started.

Of course you can't participate in any of our club events  if you're not a member - and if you haven't renewed for 2010 you are now overdue. For those of you who joined at the end of 2009, please note that your membership is good through 2010. Even with the recently approved price increase, membership of SFDI is a great deal when you consider all the activities, events, dives, discounts and overseas trips which you have the opportunity to enjoy.

See you in the water some time soon,

Pete

"POLICIES & PROCEDURES" NOW PUBLISHED ON THE WEBSITE

The rules and regulations that we must all abide by are now printed in their entirety on the website.  I cannot stress enough how important it is that all members, new and old, read and be thoroughly aware of how these rules apply to them.  I have summarized below some of the more important points.

Payment:    A member is confirmed only after they have paid. Payments for dives must  be made when signing up. Payments for trips must be made according to the schedule as outlined by the Coordinator.  In the event that a dive, trip, etc. is overbooked than those confirmed to go will be determined by the date order of payment.

Cancellation:   Once a member signs on for a dive, event, etc. he/she is obligated to pay unless they contact the Coordinator by the specified cancellation time, as outlined in the Policies and Procedures.

Certification Requirements:  Some dives will be restricted to divers with certain minimum requirements, generally as specified by the dive operator. In some cases these minimums may be set by the Coordinator in conjunction with the E-Board based on the profile and/or characteristics of the planned dive.  No exceptions will be allowed for any reason.

Special Needs:  Some of our members have "special needs" when participating on a dive or trip.  These can be cases where the person needs extra assistance on a dive boat, special requirements regarding accommodations, etc.  Coordinators are not psychic.  It is the responsibility of the member to make sure the Coordinator knows of these needs well in advance of the event.

Please be sure that these rules are clear to you.  If not, get clarification from any E-Board member.

A SAFETY MINUTE

Joe G's April, 2010 Safety Minute

Your Wetsuit Should Feel Snug But Not Tight

How can you tell if a wetsuit fits properly? First, it needs to feel snug but comfortable. An overly tight suit can hurt your circulation and impede your breathing. It won't keep you any warmer either.

Make sure the neck and chest don't feel too tight. Your suit should be form fitting, meaning there should be no loose folds.

Check out how the suit feels in the water. Once the suit fills, feel how the water heats and then warms your body. Try swimming around in the suit, to ensure that it does not allow too much water in, which will have the reverse effect and make you feel cold.
