President's Message A job well done........
~
By Pete Stephinson
After months of planning and talking about it, The SUDS Fleamarket took place this last weekend. I congratulate Captain Sam Rich for conceiving the idea, and driving it through to a successful conclusion. It was great to see the support and participation of many local businesses including dive shops, dive boats equipment suppliers, restaurants and SFDI members all working together for this worthy cause. Great job everyone!! Thank you. During the weekend there were a group of 5 disabled soldiers in town. They dove our local reefs, visited the fleamarket and we enjoyed socializing with them in the evenings. They had a great time and seeing them so upbeat despite their disabilities made me appreciate what a worthwhile cause SUDS really is. While all the proceeds have yet to be counted initial estimates are that over $15,000 Once again -- a big thank you to everybody who helped make this such a great success. And if you didn't take part, Captain Sam tells me he is already planning to do it again in 2010. The temperatures are starting to warm up and our calendar is looking very full so there is be plenty to keep us busy. We have dives, bike rides, a camping weekend and many other events on our calendar. With Spring upon us we are rapidly approaching peak diving season. This is the time of the year when we lay out a schedule of dives to cover the spring and summer. If you have enjoyed attending club dives now is the time to start thinking about what contribution you can make to our calendar. If you have a favorite dive why not set it up as a club dive? I'm sure you'll find a number of other SFDI members keen to enjoy it with you. If you don't know how to get started then Dave Schneider, myself or one of the other eBoard members will be pleased to help you. Our April meeting is a social evening. That is, we have no speaker but rather we bring in Pizza and spend the time socializing. I look forward to seeing you there. See you in the water some time soon Pete
P.S. SUDS is an acronym for Soldiers Undertaking Disabled SCUBA. SUDS helps in the rehabilitation of disabled veterans by giving them the experience of SCUBA diving. For full information access www.sudsdiving.org

Same time, same place, same fun.
AND SOME LAST IMPORTANT NOTES... Club Policies on Dives and Trips: Dives, Trips, Activities and events are run according to the SFDI Policies and Procedures, which are available to everyone. If you don’t have a copy, please ask the Membership VP, or other E-Board member at the next General Meeting. Here is a summary of some of the important ones: 1. Payment for Dives, Events and trips: A member is confirmed on a dive, trip or event only after they have paid. Payments for dives should be made when signing up. Payments for trips should be made according to the schedule as outlined by the trip coordinator. In the event that a dive/trip/activity is oversubscribed, then those confirmed will be determined by the order of payment. 2. Cancellation: Once a member signs on for a dive/event he or she is obligated to pay for that dive/event unless they contact the coordinator for that dive/event and cancel by the specified cancellation time. Not paying immediately does not eliminate the requirement to make full payment if you do not cancel within the designated cancellation period or simply fail to show up for that dive/event. 3. Certification Requirements: Some dives will be restricted to divers with certain minimum certification levels. For example Advanced Open Water. In some cases, these requirements will be set by the dive operator. In others they may be set by the dive organizer in conjunction with the E-Board based on the profile and characteristics of the planned dive. In these cases the minimum certifications required for the dive will be clearly identified on the sign up sheet and in the published calendar. No exceptions will be made for any reason. 4. Special Needs: Some of our members have “special needs” when participating on a dive or trip. These can be cases where the diver needs extra assistance on a dive boat or a member has particular requirements regarding accommodations. Dive organizers will check for the common ones, such as the requirement for extra assistance getting into or out of the water. However, it is the responsibility of the member to make sure that his/her needs are known to the organizer and if there is any doubt the member should contact the operator in advance. It is the responsibility of the club member to verify that their needs can be accommodated prior to the event/trip/activity.

Get Smart With Joe
A New Feature by Joe Gianodoto
The
ABC’s of diving glossary:
Joe Giandinoto
April,
2009 notes brought to you by the letter B
Barodontalgia - pain and discomfort caused by volume and pressure changes in
carous teeth.
barometric pressure - same as atmospheric pressure.
barotrauma - any disease or injury due to unequal pressures between a space
inside the body and the ambient pressure, or between two spaces within the body;
examples include arterial gas embolism, pneumomediastinum, and pneumothorax,
eye, middle ear and sinuses and the lung.
BC - see
buoyancy compensator.
bends - a
form of decompression sickness caused by dissolved nitrogen leaving the tissues
too quickly on ascent; is manifested by pain, usually in the limbs and joints;
"the bends" is sometimes used to signify any manifestation of
decompression sickness.
bleb - an
abnormal pocket of air in the lungs, usually under the lining of a lung, that
can rupture with ascent and lead to barotrauma.
bottom time - variable definition; in square wave diving, the time between
descending below the surface to the beginning of ascent. In multi-level diving,
the time between descending below the surface and beginning the safety stop.
(Other definitions may apply depending on the specific type of diving.)
Bowel Disease, Inflammatory -
Inflammations of the intestine, including Crohn's disease and chronic ulcerative
colitis. Some forms have complications that are adverse to diving.
Boyle's law - at a fixed temperature and for a fixed mass of gas, pressure times
volume is a constant value.
breath-hold diving - diving without life support apparatus, while holding one's breath.
BS-AC
- British SubAqua Diving Club
bubble -
a collection of air or gas surrounded by a permeable membrane through which
gases can enter or exit.
bulla -
similar to bleb; an abnormal pocket of air or fluid; sometimes found in the
lungs of patients with emphysema.
buoyancy
- tendency of object to float or sink when placed in a liquid; objects that
float are positively buoyant, those that sink are negatively buoyant and those
that stay where placed are neutrally buoyant. Buoyancy control is a very
important factor in diving safely.
buoyancy compensator - an inflatable vest worn by the diver that can be automatically or
orally inflated to help control buoyancy; abbreviated BC.

A SAFETY MINUTE
This Months Feature by Joe Giandinoto
Diving is all about safety. After all, the equipment we wear is designed to let us humans go safely into an environment that we otherwise could only stay in for maybe a minute (or seven minutes if you’re a trained free diver). Following good, safe diving practices and having the right safety gear makes our diving experiences that much more enjoyable.
From a cave diving course, I learned the
importance of streamlining, and "tightening up" my dive gear. For
scuba diving safety, avoid dangling hoses, straps, or other items that might
entangle you in kelp, a wreck, the reef, or just catch onto the seat of the dive
boat as you are making your entry. Eliminate the "dangerous dangles"
and you will be a safer, better, and more accomplished scuba diver.

Trivia Question
|
What is the name of the U.S. Divers Company fin that was a full-foot fin with a
detachable blade, and when was it offered? This fin allowed the diver to take
off his/her fins without removing the shoe portion, and therefore allowed the
diver to easily walk over coral. |
